Today I found myself undertaking some minor repairs to a garment I had recently purchased. It was an opportunity to reflect on my past experience in creating bespoke pieces for myself.
My Mother used to make my clothes as a little girl, in deed the first dress that I specifically recall being purchased for me was when I was about 9 years old.
I learnt to sew as child and then during the 1980’s to mid 1990’s, I made a lot of my own clothes.
First image c1993: with my friend Robyn on our way to her daughter’s wedding where I was MC for this very special occasion. I am wearing: Navy Blue double buttoned, fully lined suit with slim-line skirt. Fabric – premium raw silk Lining – satin Hair and make-up also by me 😃
2nd image c1991: with my friend Barbara I am wearing black velvet ball gown Fabric – black cotton velvet – full circle skirt Under skirt – full circle netting which was uniquely trimmed with satin. This prevented the net from scratching/ripping the Schiaparelli stockings (hugely expensive at the time) – talk about attention to detail. Barbara who also made her own gown of black velvet with olive green shantung silk.
Who would have thought that almost 30 years later I would be volunteering behind the scenes at a gala Fashion Runway & Pageant event with the Ravishing Fashionista’s Team with 10 designer labels on the runway.
